Installed SSD, paging still dead slow

Hi,

I've been tinkering with my old Original Macbook Air trying to keep it alive. Recently I installed a 64Gb KingSpec and was expecting some improvement... I guess it does load the OS faster now, but any time my RAM usage goes up to 2GB, the thing becomes barely responsive.

On the other hand I replaced an HDD in my 2008 Macbook Pro with Samsung 830 SSD... What a difference! It seems like I have unlimited RAM now.

Both are running latest version of Lion.

Should I try another SSD on the Air, or may be downgrade to Snow Leopard?..

Thanks,

Ivan.

Any machine is going to slow down when pushed to its maximum RAM; there's just not enough available memory. Putting in a different SSD isn't going to affect that. What are you trying to do on your computer that's taking up 2 GB of RAM? Also, how much RAM does your MacBook Pro have? The MacBook Air was never meant to be a heavy computing machine, especially at nearly 5 years old.

SSD are known for slow write speeds - where they excel is in read (boot) speeds. So that you have this "problem" (which isn't a problem at all, but part of SSD design/operation) should not be surprising.

Also you may be suffering from backward compatibility issues. I don't know or didn't look up the transfer speed of your new SSD, but it can only write as fast as the MacbookAir allows. Others have found that caused issues (you would not be the first to report hangs, freezes or slowdowns trying to get a new SSD to work on an older device). e.g. if the new SSD writes at speeds up to 56MB/sec if the machine writes at 52MB/sec that's what it will do.
