Transplant optical drive from non-unibody MacBook Pro?

I have the first gen unibody macbook pro, and it seems like the optical drive is broken... probably from dropping it :(

My friend left me an old semi-functioning mbp which was one of the last models of the non-unibodies. I guess it uses this drive

If I removed the optical drive from my friend's mbp and put it in mine, would it work?

The main reason I want to do this is for the resale value. I don't really need an optical drive personally.

The trackpad click is broken too :(

I see no problems. You can open the machine, (disconnect power & battery) connect the "new" old drive and attach the top case to power on without screwing it down tight. Apply external power and test the drive before reassembling.
