DS lite flashes then shuts off

I am fixing a friend's Nintendo DS lite. The top half is nearly separated from the rest, only the two black/grey cables are holding it in place. The screen cable is torn. I am sure I will need to buy new hinges.

When I try to turn it on, the power light turns green and the bottom half flashes white for a fraction of a second. Is there more wrong with it then the top screen and hinges? Do I need a new shell as well to replace the hinges?

I am not familiar with DSs, so excuse my ignorance.

Thanks for all your help!

This can be a normal sign with a broken top screen/hinge. I believe you will need the entire top shell to sort out your hinge problem, not just the metal bracket, as it is the silly little plastic ring of the top part that forms the support on the metal ring. It's a bad design/weak spot in the ds lite. I've replaced and replaced these again, I'd also suggest a plastic ?crystal case that give extra support to those hinges..not that noticeable on, and at $2-3 it'll save you the headache in a few months.

PS you need the top screen as the cable is integrated with it..
