Freezes during boot from HDD and DVD

Hello,

my PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz with 2 GB RAM freezes everytime during the boot process. It always stops at the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinner. Unfortunately, the same happens when trying to boot from the Install Disc. The Hardware Test did not show any hardware errors, and when starting in verbose mode I receive an I/O error and I/O Timeout.

Does anyone have useful clues?

Best regards

Oliver

I had the hard drive changed. It turned out that most HDD sectors were actually destroyed. Everything works fine now. Thanks for your help.

Try starting in Safe mode by holding the "shift" key down. Did you hold the "C" key when starting from the installation disk? What I/O error did you get? Try reseating your RAM.

Hi mayer,

Safe Mode won't work either. I tried starting from Install disc by holding "C" and via the boot menu using Alt. Both did not work. I tried opening the memory compartment but the screws are so tight I would destroy them and any further chance of opening the compartment with my tools.

The I/O Error and I/O Timeout looks like this:

disk0s3: I/O error

Here's a link to Apple discussion about the disk0s3: I/O error. A replaced hard drive fixed the problem for them. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa...
