Go into your system preferences and check your Desktop & Screen Saver as well as your Energy Saver settings both can effect how your system appears and acts when idle.

not just when idle, i leave a key for 10 seconds and it goes off. when watching a movie i hav to put samtyn on one of the keys else it goes off

Some settings are reactive to your input Vs applications actions (i.e. movies & pic slide show), these settings impact both. Did you check your settings? Are they set so your system does not go into sleep mode?

After you have altered the settings let us know what happened (you'll need to restart for them to take effect).
