Can replacing the upper case fix an non responsive keyboard?

Hi everyone

A few months ago in the middle of the night I spilled some liquid over the keyboard of my Mac. Thinking it was only a small spillage i simply left the Mac up side down and went back to bed, the next morning i turned the mac on and the keyboard was behaving strangely. Some keys were sticking and some were non responsive, however after 15 mins every single key on the board would not function.

This problem seems to be fixated only on the actual keyboard as the power button, track pad, back light and all external ports work perfectly.

I guess what I would like to know is, what exactly needs to be replaced to fix this issue?

(a cable, the keyboard or the entire upper case)

I know this is a tricky question to answer with out examining it, but i am hoping some one out here might know.

thanksss

I had that happen to me last month on my 15" MBP mid 2010 unibody. It would seem the upper case solution is the most straight forward, albeit at a whopping $329 (!) Being the cheapskate that I am, I found a keyboard-only part selling on ebay for $28, and with free shipping, too.

I searched the ifixit archives, and found out that my cheap skate route will force me to reckon with 52 tiny screws -- that is after going through 34 steps to disassemble the guts of the beast. Plus, the need to buy a Tri WIng driver to dismount the battery.

So I ended up going to my Apple-authorized service center, and dropped off the MBP + Keyboard (hoping that the corrosion hasn't killed other components too). Initial quote for labor and diagnosis converts to $56.00.

I'll know if 5 days if I saved myself $329 -- or ended up with a $120 gamble (kb + labor, then labor again to reinstall the upper case). Am hoping NOT to give credence to the adage "you pay cheap, you pay twice"
