New battery only charges to 52%

I bought a replacement battery for my macbook pro (mid 2009 15 in.,2.66ghz) after replacing the battery it will only charge to 52%. I reset the pram and the smu ,but I get the same result. Hardware readout and coconut say the battery is fine, but I did notice that the amperage from the macs power readout for the battery is negative.

Any ideas what could be wrong, or is it just a defective battery?

By new, do you mean, brand new or second hand new? You can use this app to diagnose your battery. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutba...

The battery is new from DV Wharehouse. I used the Coconut app and the battery seems fine.

I have seen new Chinese batteries fail straight out of the box... you should contact the vendor about this.
