new replacement battery not detected

I recently bought a replacement battery, and upon installing it, I discovered it will not take a charge. when I have it installed, if i remove the power cord for more than a few seconds, I will need to reboot. (if its only a few, it acts like it went to sleep, and no reboot required, so it has a LITTLE charge.)

I have tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, to no effect. does anyone know anything I can do other than returning or exchanging it? The internet has yet to yield any useful information.

Sometimes new batteries fail straight out of the box (especially knock-offs). Contact the vendor for an exchange/replacement.
