Why is screen white with Apple icon after accidental drop

The glass was broken and I took computer to apple store, since apple said they don't mail in for repairs. The apple tech couldn't do a diagnostics and told me to trade it in for a new computer, I did not think that was the affordable solution so looked online for information and found this ifixit Site which sounds helpful. I want to recovery the data on the hard drive if possible and replace broken glass and hard drive if needed. Don't know what to do. School starts in a few weeks and need the computer working. It is only 2 years that I have had it and worked fine before the accidental drop. Help. I did see the videos for taking off the hard drive but don't want to that until I save the info already on hard drive.

Try starting up from your system installation disk. Insert the disk and hold down the "C". If it boots OK, go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility and see if the hard drive can be repaired. If so, you'll just need to replace the glass. For the correct part6, please give the last three figures of your serial number.

The last 3 figures for the serial # 250, the model is a A1226

I did try to insert the disks for the software, however the disk drive slot felt like it had no tension on disk and it made a soft noise bit not the regular noise so it looks like that part is also not working, either. This is not good.

Wrong serial number. The A1226 is a MacBook Pro. Do you have another Mac to recover your data to? Do you have an external hard drive for backup? Do you have an external DVD drive?

I read the numbers as model # A1225, i dont have an external hard drive or external dvd drive, should i get them? I dont have an other mac, would an apple mini hard drive or any other external hard drive ?

Also i just read about using a hard drive dock to read the hard drive, would that be an option? To copy the files
