My Problem
My 4th Gen ipod, that I got free with a powerbook I purchased in 2004, had finally given up the ghost. It just wouldn't hold a charge.
My Fix
It was a little tricky opening up the case, but after applying a little extra elbow grease I got it open. The spudger I got helped in those hard-to-reach situations.
My Advice
Buy yourself a spudger! I do occasional Mac repairs, and metal tools always end up scratching components. I've been dying to have a spudger, and it works great!
My Problem
The battery as usual, as for the actual repair, I got away with taking one of the screws out on the board and loosening the opposite one. I did not have the actual T6 or whatever tork bit and used a small flathead instead.
My Fix
A friend of mine has claimed me as their ,"unofficial" ipod guy after on two fixins' under my belt. It isn't a bad thing. Two sets of tools, one of them broken by me during the fix, two ipods, and too much time on my hands. I have a new love of fixing Ipods
My Advice
If it was made by mankind, it can be broken and fixed by mankind........
My Problem
the battery was swollen due to cycles, had it since 2004, center button would not function due to this.
My Fix
easy, a few minutes
My Advice
don't throw it out, spend 20 bucks and you have a new ipod
My Problem
dead battery on a 6+ year old 4th gen iPod that was handed down to my daughter. it would take a 4-5 hour charge to get her 15-45 minutes of play time.
My Fix
extremely easy, except for Apple's ability to make parts fit so incredibly well that they were difficult to find seams. I could take pictures as I did the repair on my lap and the arm of my couch, with the ifixit iPhone app open next to me (and a shirt pocket to hold the two torx screws). kudos on the app, btw. I loved that it didn't let the screen dim or turn off the entire time I used it for the repair guide.
instructions were very clear. and as stated, patience is the key. it does take several passes to part the seams initially. after that, it's just following directions. put back together in reverse order which literally took about 45 seconds. took longer to grab the screws from the bottom of my pocket than anything else.
My Advice
as stated, patience in the initial prying of the case halves. they will come. perhaps consider a plastic butter knife or something that you can use in place of the spudger to pry well-holding battery adhesive. mine was put on very well and I was afraid I'd damage the tip of the spudger for a later use. and for the battery cable itself, I used a spudger to hold the seat and board down, while using some curved needle-nose pliers to grab the cable at the jack as it didn't seem to want to come either.
My Problem
iPod 4G/Photo battery not working
My Fix
No problems - clear instructions from iFixit on opening iPod and removing and replacing battery
My Advice
Make a note of orientation of battery connection to assist in re-inserting
My Problem
My old 20GB iPod 4G is connected to the car stereo via a dock/charger integration kit. I started noticing the car taking longer to start only a few months after installing a new car battery. So in making sure I removed all the extra loads from the car, I thought of the iPod in the glove compartment and sure enough disconnecting it made my problems go away. I noticed when I plugged it in at home that it would "charge forever" and never indicate it was fully charged -- at that point I realized that over the course of a few months it was sucking my car battery!
My Fix
I installed a replacement battery. Repair was easy with the tools provided. The old battery was stuck pretty well with adhesive so I would say be prepared to pull hard.
My Advice
I would suggest maybe removing all the Torx screws and pulling out the board completely -- the current instructions involve removing only 2 screws to lift up the board, but then you are bending a very thin part of the board especially if the battery is stuck in there.
My Problem
Battery would net hold a charge at all...
My Fix
The repair was super easy! The hardest part was removing the old battery; it just did not want to come out. Finally, it did.
My Advice
Just be as patient as possible!
My Problem
My battery was almost dead, I couldn't listen the music for more that 1 hour, so I decided to replace it.
My Fix
Actually, it was very easy, following the guides from iFixit.
Tha hardest part was the first step, opening the iPod. Since I have some experience from prior jobs, everything else was pretty smooth. It took me some 15 minutes at all.
My Advice
I used only your guide, it was sure enough.
My Problem
Battery was worn out.
My Fix
Perfectly. Instruction guide with photos was very clear and easy to follow.
My Advice
Just follow the iFixit instructions and all will be well!
My Problem
My 2004 iPod is one of my favorite possessions. Sad was the day it stopped holding a charge altogether. You need a new one, everyone said. But I'm not that fickle and I stuck with it even though we always needed to be near an outlet! Then I heard aout iFixit. The perfect solution.
My Fix
The little repair tool helped, but eventually broke. The credit card worked better. The entire operation lasted about 15-20 minutes.
My Advice
Watch the videos, work patiently.
