Stories

My Problem

The computer worked fine, but the hard drive was seven years old, about the time they stop working. So my friend and I replaced the hard drive and increased the memory.

My Fix

With your replacement parts, and your how to articles, it was very easy. My friend had already replaced the hard drives in his and his daughters iMacs, so he had no trouble guiding me through the procedure. We are both retired, and are thinking of doing this to make a little extra money, at least in the winter time.

My Advice

Make sure you have the right tools, have a good place to work on your repair, and most of all, DON'T BE AFRAID. The info on this site will get you through with no problems.

My Problem

I have an iMac thats about 6 years old and it needed a little boost. It only came with 1GB or memory and that just wasn't cutting it anymore with some of the larger, faster applications out today. With a quick look at my machines serial number, iFixit had the exact parts and guides I needed to give my computer the kick it needed (2x2GB RAM). Now I'm opening programs and flying through tabs and screens with ease! Thanks iFixit!

My Fix

I got my parts faster than I anticipated and the repair was a sweet breeze! with only one small philips panel screw on the underside of the monitor with a few faint picture instructions next to it, it wasn't exactly brain surgery. But it all went smoothly regardless! Popped one RAM chip out, stuck 2 brand new ones in easy as pie.

My Advice

If you can't seem to figure it out on your own, the iFixit website has all the explanation one would need to get you through this repair/upgrade.

My Problem

Couldn't run apps, forget flash and videos and even word processing...

5 year old macbook black was rheumatoid and exasperatingly slow

My Fix

New flash ssd

Doubled RAM

It's a new machine! Extra fast. Very very happy. Will use it for another 3-4 years I hope

My Advice

Online guides

My Problem

Two laptops had gotten very slow after updating to Maverick OS

My Fix

The upgrade went very well. The guides were excellent

My Advice

Follow instructions carefully. Especially pay attention to screw sizes.

My Problem

After the OS upgrade (10.7.5) the system begun requiring more memory (for no real reason actually) so I decided to buy more RAM to speed up the browser, email client, skype conversations and my dev VMs. The improvement allow me to keep my VMs on and talk on skype while browsing.

My Fix

Smooootly. I took less than 10 minute. Nothing exploded.

My Advice

Do it! Worth it definitely, though the biggest improvement will be updating the HD with an SSD.

My Problem

Increased the memory and replaced battery. Not able to find parts at the Apple store

My Fix

Perfect. The repair guide was really helpful

My Advice

No

My Problem

My Mac mini was running a little slow. Programs were taking time to boot up, and forget about running more than one application at a time.

My Fix

The guides were fantastic and easy to follow. I had never worked on a computer this small before, so I was unsure about it, but with the older machine, I figured it was worth the risk. Everything worked as advertised.

My Advice

When moving the Bluetooth and wireless antennas, be careful of the springs! The spring under the Bluetooth antenna shot up, off my desk when I moved the part. I lost the spring under my desk, but found it later.... At the end of my repair

My Problem

Upgrade vs. new

My Fix

Piece of cake...very straight forward. Formatting hard drive and setting up OS X was the only process that took some time

My Advice

Keep it up! Thanks

My Problem

I use my Macbook as a DVR for OTA television. I was going to buy a new Mac mini to replace it, but installing a bigger hard drive and more RAM saved money and extended the useful life of the Macbook.

My Fix

Extremely easy to do the replacements. The online guides were very helpful.

My Advice

Delete unused files and applications on your existing haddrive before using SuperDuper to make the new harddrive a bootable drive. You need to buy the USB drive case to hook up the harddrive to do the copying (it's part of the package that comes with a set of tools too).

My Problem

The usual - my Mac gets greedy for more RAM.

My Fix

Easy as swapping 2 slices of bread from the toaster - except with screwdriver.

My Advice

Don't use the Force..infact don't use any force. And I had no need to reset the PRAM.
