My Advice

iFixit provides you with pictures that are worthless without an internet connection and an extra computer to view while you fix yours. Nothing ventured is nothing gained. Look at pictures; figure it out; go for it.

My Problem

The superdrive on my MBP gave up the ghost a while ago and I went without it for a while. Eventually I decided I needed to do something about it and on a whim searched for replacement drives. I found iFixit and after a little reading decided to go for it.

My Fix

Easy to replace - but also very easy to lose the little screws that you remove from the computer.

My Advice

Keep a nice bowl handy to hold all of the loose screws while your in the thick of the replacement.

My Problem

I have a MacBook Pro that I have had for about 4 years, which for me is a record. It just won't die. And the pieces that do die, places likeifixit make it so easy to replace. My SuperDrive decided it would no longer read DVD's or DVD-DL's. Ordered one, and 10 minutes later the problem was solved! And it lives on...

With the right tools, it was a 10 minute swap. Easy peasy!

My Advice

Not nearly as hard as you may think. If you're not familiar with taking a MacBook Pro apart, just follow the step by steps, be careful with the screws, and take your time.

My Problem

MacBook Core 2 Duo, 2Ghz, Black model, Late 2006, A1181.

Bluetooth not found, Heat on cpu-core up to 90 degrees Celsius, Fan got noisy and Dvd not accepting or ejecting disks.

I don't know ware the magic has gone. It's not here any more.

My Fix

After a "practice run" before I got my parts everything went smooth. Thanks to the different guides on iFixit all the repairs felt solid. UNTIL... I booted up my machine and everything worked great I thought. Time for the real TEST, the DVD Drive. It did not accept my disk! Something was blocking the entry. I finally got a disk inside by forcing it in there, not a god idea. The disk mounted on the desktop but now something was blocking it from ejecting. I let my mac and myself get some rest over the night and in the morning I opened the mac again to physically remove the disk from the drive. After reinserting the dvd drive and booting my mac it accepts and ejects disks properly. Now the Magic is back!!

My Advice

My advice is to not be scared by all the Magic hiding inside your device. By following the guides you are safe(er) than just going on your own.

My Problem

Replaced the SuperDrive optical on an aging MacBook Pro, since the old one had failed.

My Fix

This repair takes a while (I'd say leave a half hour at least), since there are about a billion tiny screws to come out and keep in order. Some of them are seated pretty securely, and so you'll want to have a good small phillips head and a table where you can apply leverage. You'd be screwed if you stripped them...

My Advice

Have good light and a level working surface to do this - those you'd be screwed if those screws fell on the floor...

My Problem

My daughter has the first gen Macbook Early 2006 and it was getting hot and shutting down and the optical drive had stopped working as well. Took it to the GenusBar and was told it was an antique and they wouldn't even attempt a repair on it.

My Fix

So off to iFixit I went. Got the parts for about $200 (fan and drive) and in about 30 minutes had them both swapped out. All went well even on this old machine. Very happy daughter.

My Advice

Don't attempt a repair without the proper tools especially on an older unit as everything is fragile and needs tender care.

My Problem

I bought our Macbook new a few years ago from the Apple Store (Santa Rosa Model) and we love it. However, the optical drive started working irratically recently. It did not read sometimes, and occasionally it would not burn, or the disc burned had problems. Decided to replace with your Super Drive.

My Fix

I would have NEVER been able to do this without your photos and step by step instructions. In addition, the required screw driver is not a size that most folks have handy in their home, so I was very happy I also ordered the recommended tools from you (including the sparger). Your website is fantastic. I would have never been able to figure out my model and what type of drive to order that was compatable. But your website guided me through the process. And lastly, you were right, the new drive SCREAMS! That thing is much faster than the original drive. Many thanks.

I was originally going to take it to the Apple store to fix it (and I was even considering forking out big bucks to replace the whole laptop!), but Apple Store never answered their phones. Glad I went to you. I changed the drive out it in the time it would have taken me to drive over to the store and then go back and pick it up.
