I just tested -- they seem to be completely interchangeable :)

Good to know.

Here's a twist:

The connectors are interchangeable between all Video iPods and the thin (80, 120, thin 160 GB) Classics.

HOWEVER, the thick 160 GB Classic uses a different cable and connector (it's still a ZIF connector, but half the size).

Compare the cables for Video/thin Classic and thick Classic iPods to see the difference.

Product Image

iPod Classic (Thick) Hard Drive Cable

Connects hard drive to logic board — 8 available at 9.95 each.

iPod Video or Classic (Thin Case) Hard Drive Cable

Connects hard drive to logic board — 28 available at 9.95 each.

ah yeah i forgot to mention that.. good point, thanks!

But Can a thin be used in place of thick?

according to the right statement made the thin is twice the size, so the answer should be no.
