Computer doesn’t power on

Hi- My old but reliable, until now, MacBook Pro won’t turn on. I hope someone can help. Here are the symptoms:

  • Magsafe adapter has no light, except if the computer has been unplugged with no battery for several minutes, the adapter flashes green one time when it’s plugged back in.
  • When plugged in, the 3rd battery indicator light from the front is green. The rest are off.
  • No other signs of life.
  • I tried resetting the SMC a few times following online guides. I tried letting computer sit unplugged without battery. I tried different Magsafe adapter. I tried different battery, although one I’m unsure if works. I tried with no battery.
  • This happened the day after replacing the battery and calibrating new one (from OWC). I called OWC who couldn’t help, said bad battery couldn’t cause other symptoms, was coincidence. I am returning battery for them to test though.

Could it be bad DC-in board? I read about that part here, but it’s not clear what symptoms would indicate replacing it.

I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!!

With battery in, or when plugged in with battery out, the 3rd battery indicator light from the front is green. The rest are off.

Have you taken this computer apart?

Not recently. Replaced a fan about a year ago. Added memory a few years ago, and replaced HD with SSD.

Is there a possibility that it could have shorted?

As I mentioned, I did change the battery about a day before this happened. Maybe flipping it over accelerated a deteriorating connection breaking, or something else not quite right inside? I was pretty careful though.

That seems possible, was the battery of good quality?

by

Yes, from OWC. I’ve bought 2 previously from them which I was happy with. Of course it could be an individual bad one. I’m sending it back for them to test.

Thanks. Probably buying new used computer. Don’t think it’s worth trying to replace motherboard or other trial and error with a machine this old.
