Why is my lid not closing?

Hi!

The Macbook that I just bought used 4 days ago started doing this (see pics) yesterday! I was perfectly fine the other days. I’ve tried removing and reinstalling the display, loosening the screws opening the lid and tightening the screws back down and it’s no different. It seems that one side is higher than the other. This computer hasn’t even been out of the house!

Ty!

@noda - Can you post a few more pics this time with the bottom cover back on, straight on from the back edge and looking down to the bottom cover from the back side. That way we can see whats bowed.

@danj - I fixed it by putting some grease on the right hinge (SuperDrive side). now it closes perfectly. I have no idea why it started to not close but either way its all good now except when opening it from being closed at around 90º it starts to lift the bottom case. idk if that's normal or not so

The hinge is a double-acting one. In the main body each end of the hinge has a bracket that screws to the main chassis. One of the brackets on my laptop had the screws slightly loose. That movement was enough to cause binding and twisting of the hinge axis. The actual friction mechanism has multiple plates that will work even with extra lubrication.

I had exactly the same issue resolved with a bit of wd40.

thanks for writing on this! stupid question .. but how and where did you spray it on? thanks! Marina

by

@nina1980 - to the hinges under the clutch cover. Only use a VERY tiny amount or it could make it too loose

by

@nina1980 don't spray, use an earbud to apply it.

Very useful. at the beginning I thought it was the swollen battery, it was not. Then I realized the lid was far to hard to move and I have stepped into this article. Sprayed wd40 on the hinges with the back plate open, the lid became softer and the magnetic lock is now fully fuctional. Thanks!
