Where is my processor speed located?
Hi,
I can't seem to find the location or any info regarding the processor speed on my iBook g3. Because there were so many models of this particular Mac made, I don't know specific year, but I do know that it has 2 USB and 1 Firewire port(s), and from the research I've done, I think it's late 2001? Anyway, it runs OS 9.2, I'm trying to update to 10.4, but the cd drive no longer works, and the keyboard connector to the motherboard is busted (both easily fixable), but I can't until I know processor speed. I've gone through utilities, and have found processviewer, but something is wrong with the app. I have also tried "About this Mac" but nothing. Any ideas? Should I just replace the hard drive with a 160 gb that has 10.4 and re-install it?
thanks for your help!

Go under the Apple (upper left hand corner) to either About this Mac or system profiler and it will tell you exactly what Mac you have.

Hi Patrick, All iBook G3's except the very first will run 10.4 if you have enough memory. The deciding factor on using the drive with 10.4 on it is was the OS installed on a PPC computer? If so I would go ahead and try it. If it works you can find the cpu speed by clicking "about this Mac" and then the more info button. None of this will work however if the drive was loaded from a Intel unit as they use different formats.
Becuase I picked this up from a school district, I have no idea as to the status of os 9 being loaded from a ppc computer...the drive doesn't open either way, so I'm thinking I'll have to replace that. Another option I'm considering is taking a 120 gb hdd, which is the limit for this type, putting it in my 08 MacBook and installing 10.4 that way and then installin it in the iBook that way...think it would work? It would give me time to get the combo drive and fix the keyboard problems
No the PPC and Intel CPU's require a different format and are not compatible with each other. You would need to use a PPC computer to format and install 10.4 for it to function in the G3. The OS copies for the two have differences also.
