How to fix my corrupt Passport external HDD

I believe my passport was unplugged from my Windows computer without going thru the proper logging off procedures so now I cannot access my data. My computer will hang up at times. Other times i will be able to see the drive and the main folders that are on the external drive but I cannot access. What can I do to get my data back?

I still use Norton Utilities to salvage corrupted external drives from improper dismounting (under Windows). There are other disk repair apps out there that will do the same. If on the other hand you banged or disconnected the drive while it was in the process of writing or reading you may have a bigger problem.

@danj Norton was THE repair program I used for years but this seems to be only for PCs. What is your "go to" for Macs now?

@mayer - I like ProSofts stuff, I use Drive Genius and Data Rescue. We have the pro version for Mac's. They also make a PC version for Windows Data Rescue PC. I still use my Norton ;-} on Windows systems when I need it.

@danj my go to has been TechTool Pro for the last decade. https://www.micromat.com/products/techto...
