What screwdriver do I need to open my Xbox 360?

A Torx 8 (T8) or Torx Security (TR8) screwdriver and a Torx 10 or Torx Security (TR10) screwdriver can remove the standard torx screws securing the case and components inside the Xbox 360.

Standard Torx vs. Security Torx

The screws that hold together the Xbox 360 are standard torx screws. Security torx screws, found in Xbox controllers and PlayStation consoles, have a "dot" in the middle which prevent standard torx screwdrivers from fitting. If you plan on opening an Xbox controller you'll want a torx security screwdriver on hand.

Important

Follow iFixit's screwdriver best practices to ensure an optimal fit when removing screws. In general, use the largest driver size that fits snugly into the screw to avoid stripping the screw.

What other tools will I need to repair and clean my Xbox 360?

Spudger

A spudger or prying tool is needed to release clips and latches and pry off the vents and face plates of the 360.

Metal Spudger

If the plastic spudger is not offering enough power behind your pry, then a metal spudger is the next best tool.

Warning

Be sure to exercise caution when using this tool. With its great strength comes the potential to scratch or otherwise damage components that might be better served with plastic tools.

Optional: Xbox 360 Opening Tool

iFixit's Xbox 360 opening tool is not a necessary tool but it will simplify the process of removing the original Xbox 360's case.
