Samsung Chromebook Series 5 3G Troubleshooting

Chromebook won't turn on ¶

Drained/dead Battery ¶

The first thing to check for when your Chromebook won't turn on is a dead battery. Plug the unit in via AC charger and let it charge for at least 30 min to an hour and try turning it on again.

Blank Screen ¶

A "blank screen" is when the light on the power button is on, but the screen remains black.

First try powering your Chromebook off by holding the power button down for six seconds, then turning it back on again. If you cannot power it off, let the battery run out until it powers off, then charge the battery back up and power it on again.

If this does not work, reset your Chromebook with the following steps:

  • Power off your Chromebook off.
  • Insert a paperclip into the reset hole located to the back feet on the underside of the laptop.
  • While pressing the paperclip in, press power button.

Overheated computer ¶

If no lights turn on when the power button is pressed and the computer is very hot on the bottom, your computer may be overheated. You will have to wait a few minutes until it has cooled down. Unplug the laptop from its power cable and let it sit with the vents unobstructed. After at least 10-15 minutes, try turning the computer on again. If it boots normally, the computer was too hot. Try using the laptop on a hard surface to help prevent this in the future.

Corrupt operating system ¶

If the computer lights up but gives you a message saying "Operating System Not Found", your operating system may be corrupted. You will have to reinstall Chrome OS to fix this error. Follow Google’s Recover your Chromebook article to reinstall Chrome OS. If the error does not go away after a successful reinstall, continue reading.

Broken hard drive ¶

If lights turn on when the power button is pressed, but ChromeOS does not load, your computer’s hard drive may be broken. The screen will display a message saying, “No operating system found.” You will have to replace the hard drive.

Broken motherboard ¶

If no lights turn on when the power button is pressed even when the battery is charged, your motherboard is broken. If it is still covered by warranty, you will have to send the laptop into the manufacturer to have this replaced.

Computer doesn't connect to the internet ¶

Incorrect WiFi password ¶

If your laptop does not connect to the Internet, the password you entered for the Wi-Fi could be wrong or recently changed. Try reentering the network password.

Broken or improperly-set-up wireless router ¶

If your laptop does not connect to the Internet, your router could be faulty. Try connecting a different device to the same wireless network. If that device has issues connecting, reset the router and check that all cables are plugged in correctly. If after a reset, devices still can't connect to the router, the router is faulty or your Internet provider is down.

Battery doesn't charge ¶

Broken Wall Outlet ¶

If your laptop does not charge while plugged into that outlet, you could have a broken wall outlet. Plug something else into the same outlet. If the other device does not get power after these steps, your outlet is broken. If the other device does get power, try another guide in this section.

Broken Power Cable ¶

If the computer does not charge a functional battery, the power cable might be faulty. The easiest way to check this is to borrow an identical power cable to test in your laptop. If your battery charges with the borrowed cable, you have a faulty power cable. Purchase a new power adapter in the following link. Power Adapter.

Old Battery ¶

If the computer runs normally when the power cable is plugged in but turns off when the cable is removed, the battery is broken. If you have had the computer for more than a year, the battery will lose its ability to charge and will die very quickly. Replace the broken battery with the identical model from the manufacturer.

Computer won't cool down ¶

Blocked Vent ¶

If the laptop's cooling vents are blocked, the laptop will get too hot. Ensure that these vents are not blocked by anything. If the computer stays hotter than normal, read on.

Clogged Fan ¶

If the internal cooling fan is clogged with dust, it will not be able to cool the inside of the computer. Use compressed air to clean it out. If the device still runs hot, move on to the next option.

Computer is too slow or doesn't respond to input ¶

Device is overheating ¶

If your device is too hot, the operating system will slow down. Feel the bottom of the device to see if it is unusually warm. Shut down the computer and let it cool down. If your laptop still overheats, see the Computer doesn't cool down section above.

Too many programs open ¶

If you have many tabs open, your computer will slow down. Close a few tabs and see if the computer becomes more responsive. Restart the computer if it does not.

Not enough memory (RAM) ¶

This is not a common problem with chromebooks, but if your device runs slower than usual, or crashes frequently, you may be running out of RAM.

Screen is black but I can see the start up page very faintly. It flickered before and corrected it self, museums to have happened when opening or closing the lid. Now permanently dark screen

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem, and just wondered if it could be fixed??

Sammie Beene -

i have the same issue and i think its part of the wiring. samsung didnt put any quality into the chromebooks so they fall apart too easily

Duncan -

Your brightness it probably low try pressing the key that resembles a sun the bigger key is to make the screen Brighter while the key that resembles a smaller sun makes your screen dimmer.

My chromebook wont charge with any charger, and we bought new ones too, but it still won't cooperate. It's been about two months now, and it still won't charge at all. Is there any saving my laptop?

Kryztof Man - Reply

Your battery isn't dead and you charger works fine. Don't bother with the crap you read above. The reality is this notebook has a major flaw. The charging port is defective. Samsung is fully aware of this problem and even after you send it in for repair, they send it back after having done nothing to repair the problem. Why? Because they would have to replace the main board on every Chromebook 2 they have sold. I contacted attorney's from to inform them of this criminal activity and so should you. We are doing what we can to start a class action lawsuit against Samsung. Email me at or contact the attorney directly at the website I have provided to join in.

My laptop was working and then I got off it for a while until it shut off. When I turned it back on the screen is now gray and part of it had lines on it. No matter what I do the screen doesn't change. Any answers??

My wife's Samsung Chromebook powers up, but only to a grey colored screen with the top half of it a darker shade of grey, and vertical lines down the center.

Anyone find a way to recover from this?

My Samsung Chromebook won't turn on and it blinks white 1 time and sometime 2-4 times. I let it charge for 1 day but still not work. What does white light blinking mean?

I have a new-ish power adapter (3-4 months old), but it no longer charges my Chromebook 503C. The power indicator light does not come on when plugged in. I have left it plugged in (yes. I tried different electrical outlets) overnight, and still nothing. I hate to throw it away, as all my passwords are stored on it, and I like its (previous) ease of use.

I have a Samsung Chromebook, model XE303C12 that won't turn on. When I plug in the charger, the light near the charger port is green, but I cannot get the device to turn on. Any suggestions?

What ended up happening to it? I'm having a similar problem right now

is there recourse for replacing battery as mine only works plugged in and immediately shuts down if disconnected. The notion its old battery should get replaced is obsurd since I have a cabinet of dinosaur devices that if i had felt like using would function,,,

I log in with password and the screen goes black for 30-45 seconds, the reboots to the password page. Enter the password again and the process of going black and resetting continues. Cannot get into Chrome at all. For the heck of it I entered a bad password and it recognizes that the password is wrong.

The top left of my chomebook was loose and the bottom right was loose with the screw in it, when I was on my chromebook, my screen turned black and then when I got home and tried there were glitchy pixels whenever I tried to adjust the screen, then it shut itself off. I tried a second time but this time when it shut it self off it stayed off with no life in it, but the chromebook charging light can still go on when I try to charge it. Any solutions?

Installed Ubuntu on CB 500C, flashrom -w cr-48 bios successfully to the running Ubuntu machine, entered reboot and when the power button light came on the screen stayed powered off as well as fans and what seemed to be the whole board. I did make a backup using flashrom -R backup.bin, i have that backup on usb aswell as the cr-48.bin… I bricked it perfectly, or what seems to be perfectly considering I don’t know any key combo from here(if there is one). How do I reflash my CB 500C? I do have 8 pin prongger that I can hookup to my raspberry pi 2b, but I’m worried that reflashing from an external node may cause cpu interference, I am unsure about this further… Help?:)
