PS4 Screwdriver: TR8 or TR9?

A TR8 or TR9 Torx Security screwdriver can remove the security fasteners located on the back of the PS4 case and throughout the device.

A Torx Security screwdriver is essential to opening your PS4. The tip of the Torx Security (we refer to it as a TR#) screw head has a small hole in the center which differs from a standard Torx screw head (referred to as a T#).

Important!

Follow iFixit's screwdriver best practices to ensure an optimal fit when removing screws. Do not force an undersized driver into a screw, as this can strip the screw, making it much harder to remove.

Tip:

You can bypass these security screws with nothing but a small flathead screwdriver. You can decide how you want to tackle these security screws but do not listen to a random Redditor that tells you to "use a Phillips and really get in there" unless you want to strip the screws on the outside of the case.

There is more than one “PS4 Screwdriver.” You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the hard drive if you want to upgrade it to a newer and faster SSD. This screwdriver will also be necessary to replace the fan and remove the brackets that keep the power supply unit secured as well as a few other screws peppered among the Torx security screws. Check iFixit's PS4 repair guides for more guidance on when to use a Phillips.

Tip:

When a disc gets stuck inside the console you can use a Phillips screwdriver to turn a screw and manually eject the disc. The screw is located on the bottom of the Pro and Slim models and underneath the top cover of the normal PS4 models. Check with Sony for the exact location.

A PH00 screwdriver can remove the screws on the rear case of the controller.

Note:

Depending on which model you own you may need to remove more than just the screws to open your controller. Check the appropriate repair guide for your controller.

Tweezers are handy to remove the plastic screw covers and warranty stickers that block the screws on the outside of the case. If you’re having too much trouble disconnecting the power supply with precision tweezers, patience, and lots of wiggling, needle-nose pliers can provide the extra grip you need.
