Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace my Nintendo Switch battery myself?

Yes, you can replace your Nintendo Switch battery yourself. iFixit provides free step-by-step repair guides for every Switch and sells a DIY Battery Fix Kit for the standard Switch and Switch OLED. The kit includes all the necessary tools and parts (including thermal putty) to replace the battery, except for an adhesive remover, such as high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol.

Most of the repair process is relatively straightforward and involves handling screws, connectors and case components. However, since the battery is held down by a significant amount of adhesive, removing the battery can be challenging, especially for those with limited DIY repair experience. Novices should not go into this repair without reviewing the iFixit replacement guide and feedback from community members who attempted the repair.

Important

If you have high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol you can use it to soften the adhesive that holds the battery. The thermal compound that bridges the gap between the shield plate and the copper heat sink can be reused if it makes significant contact between the heat sink and the shield during reassembly.

How much does it cost to replace my Nintendo Switch battery myself?

iFixit's battery replacement kit for the Switch and Switch OLED costs $40, before taxes and shipping. However, you will need to consider the cost of high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol.

ModelNintendo's Cost (Out of Warranty)^iFixit CostSavings
Nintendo Switch$99$39.99$59
Nintendo Switch OLED$139$39.99$99
Nintendo Switch Lite$89$29.99$59

^ Nintendo's estimated cost as of January 2025

Note

The savings estimate does not consider the cost of additional tools for the Switch Lite battery replacement (there is no fix kit available), the additional costs for adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol, and the cost of thermal putty, such as K5 Pro.

How long does it take to fix a Nintendo Switch battery?

While the time investment can vary based on the model and your DIY experience, repairing your Switch battery yourself is feasible. The repair should take you anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. If you get stuck, iFixit's community of fixers can help.

@rexguyvance The Nintendo Switch Toolkit will give you the best bang for your buck if you have a need for additional tinkering tools. If you are replacing the battery, the battery fix kit comes with the Tri-point Y00 bits Phillips #000 (iFixit's PH bits are compatible with JIS screws). You can also buy the bits individually.

We need to update the isopropyl alcohol suggestions to an adhesive remover that works. NES changed their adhesive formulation and ETOH does not work. WD40 works great.
