LCD Problems ¶ 

Dead Pixels ¶ 

If there is a pixel on your screen that does not show any color, you may have a dead pixel. The LCD may need replacement. Consult Manufacturer for more details.

Black Screen ¶ 

Your laptop may have been set to use an external monitor (eg. Projector, TV). To change the monitor output hold fn and press F4 and wait a few seconds. Repeat 4 times. If this does not fix the issue, your computer’s backlight may need to be replaced. Consult Manufacturer for more details.

Cracked Screen ¶ 

LCD may need replacement. Consult Manufacturer for more details.

Keyboard Problems ¶ 

Keystroke Not Registering ¶ 

First, run system diagnostics and check to make sure the keyboard status is normal. If this is not the case, something may be wrong with the keyboard itself. If only one key is malfunctioning, it may be more effective to replace only the key components affected. However, if multiple keys are malfunctioning, it may be more effective to replace the entire keyboard. See this guide for help replacing the keyboard assembly.

Stuck Key ¶ 

Keys maybe become stuck if any dirt or grime gets under the keycaps. A faulty key assembly beneath the caps may also cause this. Remove the keycaps by applying a steady prying motion to the key with a safe pry tool until the cap pops off. Clean off any debris and reattach the cap. If the key is still faulty the keyboard assembly may need replacing. Consult Manufacturer for more details. See this guide for information on how to replace the battery.

Battery Problems ¶ 

Not Charging ¶ 

To diagnose the issue, first run System Diagnostics and check the battery status. If battery condition is normal, check to see if the device’s AC adaptor is working correctly. Try charging the device’s battery with another adaptor. If this still does not fix the issue, your device may have a bad battery. A replacement may need to be purchased. Draining Excessively Fast ¶ 

If your battery is not holding a charge for very long (i.e. less than 3 hours of moderate use before needing to be recharged), something may be wrong. First, run System Diagnostics and check the battery status. If battery condition is not listed as ‘Normal’, action needs to be taken. For the following statuses, the following actions may be required:

Calibrate - Battery needs to be calibrated (See HP’s Webpage for details)

Weak - Battery is not holding a charge and may need to be replaced. Possibly due to age.

Replace - Battery needs to be replaced. Consult manufacturer for more details.

Not Detected - Battery is not being registered by the device. Disconnect the battery and reconnect. Ensure flush connection with port. Clean with cloth to ensure no dirt is blocking the connection.

Mousepad Problems ¶ 

Laggy Cursor ¶ 

First, run System Diagnostics and see if touchpad condition is normal. If the condition is listed as normal, some quick fixes may need to be made. Go to ‘’Control Panel’’, Click on the ‘’Mouse’’ Tab, and then hit the ‘’Pointer Options’’ tab. Once there make sure that your pointer speed is not set to a slow setting.

If this wasn’t the cause of your problem, you might have to update your driver. Go to ‘’Control Panel’’, Click on ‘’Device Manager’’ and then go to ‘’Mice and other pointing devices’’. Open the tab and right click on your mouse and select properties. From here go to the ‘’Driver’’ tab and select update driver. If your mouse continues to be laggy, it might be a hardware problem and your device’s touchpad may need to be replaced. Consult Manufacturer for more details.

Not Registering Touches ¶ 

There are a few reasons for why your touchpad may not be registering your touches.

Start by cleaning your touchpad with an ammonia-based cleaner since the constant contact with your hands may cause the accumulation of dirt and other things that will prevent if from registering your touch.

If your touchpad still continues to be unresponsive, if might be hardware problems and you may have to get it replaced.

Miscellaneous Problems ¶ 

No Sound ¶ 

Check and see if your system volume is turned off. In the lower right hand corner of the desktop, click on the volume icon (speaker symbol) and make sure the volume is not muted or too low to hear.

Make sure the volume within the program you are using is turned on. For example, if you are watching youtube, make sure the volume is on for the video you are watching. The icon for sound will usually be in the lower right hand corner of the video screen.

If the volume is turned on for both the computer and the program, you may have a problem with the sound card, speakers, or inner wiring. You can check the sound card within the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers section of the Device Manager. If this is working properly, the problem must be with the other two.

For both the speakers and the wiring, you will need to open up your computer to check for physical damage. It is highly unlikely that there is anything wrong with this hardware but if there is, consult the Manufacturer for replacement. Laggy / Slow ¶ 

There are many possible reasons that your computer may be “laggy”. A simple, yet effective fix for a slow computer is upgrading the RAM. Random Access Memory (RAM) allows the computer to quickly access information and use it without having to start up the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). In general, the more available RAM your computer has, the faster it should run. See this guide for help on replacing or upgrading your computer’s RAM.

Another possible fix for a slow computer is upgrading your computer’s hard drive. There are two possible options: a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or a Solid State Drive (SSD). Each has its own advantages, which may or may not benefit your computer. In general, HDD’s tend to be slower, but offer more storage space and are not as expensive. On the other hand, SSD’s tend to be very fast, but they sacrifice storage space and cost efficiency. If your computer is running slowly or not booting up in a reasonable amount of time, you may want to consider upgrading it’s hard drive to an SSD.
