Nothing Happens When Power Button Is Pressed ¶ 

Power button is pressed but no lights come on and there is no response from computer.

There might be an error in hardware configuration ¶ 

Due to some changes in the hardware configuration or an improper sleep/hibernate mode entry, your laptop might need a hard reset. To do a hard reset unplug all external devices from the laptop and press and hold both power and "Beats" buttons for 10 seconds.

Battery may be dead ¶ 

Plug charger in and make sure the charging light is on. Try to turn the computer on again and if it does turn on, you battery might be bad. Follow the guide at this link to replace the battery.

Laptop Overheats And Makes A Lot Of Noise ¶ 

One of the most common problems for the laptops is that they get too hot quickly.

HP CoolSense does not work properly ¶ 

HP CoolSense is designed to figure out whether laptop is sitting on something stationary or whether it is being moved around. This helps it gauge how much cooling it would need. Sometimes the program can misfire and run fans at near 100% when it is not needed. Turning off HP CoolSense by left clicking on the HP CoolSense button in the notification area and choosing "Off" in the popup window. If the problem persists you can always turn it back on if you wish.

Fan clogged up with dust and dirt ¶ 

Get a can of compressed air and try to get the dirt out by blowing it into the vents on the back. If the problem persists, you can clean the fan more thoroughly by using this fan replacement guide and try to clean both fans with the brush or compressed air, instead of replacing it. Finally, if the fans are still loud and do not provide cooling after being cleaned, replacing fans might be necessary. Use the link above to replace both fans.

Computer might be too overloaded ¶ 

A lot of laptops are suffering from poor cooling compared to desktop PCs as they are meant to be mobile and not meant for constant and high workload. If you do tend to run some load-intensive programs on your laptop, an external heating solution like a laptop cooling pad is recommended.

I Can't Connect To The Internet ¶ 

No connection to wifi internet can be established.

Makes sure the WiFi is on and being broadcast. Check the small light in the top right corner of the F12 key to make sure that the WiFi light is white. If it is red press fn+F12 to turn the wireless connections on. If the problem persists, try using HP's guide for troubleshooting wireless network connections.

Wireless card is broken ¶ 

You can replace the card by following this wireless card replacement guide.

My Disc (Optical) Drive Won't Read/Open ¶ 

Either you are unsuccessfully trying to eject a disc from the optical drive, or you are trying to plug in a new disc but you are not able to do so.

Drivers are not properly installed ¶ 

Try removing CD/DVD drive drivers by searching for and opening a Device Manager from the Start Menu. From there you need to expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives" list, right click on the name of your CD-drive and select "Uninstall". Once you confirm the action and the process finished, click on Action->Scan for hardware changes to install those drives from Microsoft Update. Latest drivers can also be found at the HP device page.

Drive is broken ¶ 

If the drive is broken, you can replace it using this optical drive replacement guide.

Windows Takes A Long Time To Boot Up ¶ 

It takes over a minute for a computer to boot up.

Hard drive is slow ¶ 

Mechanical hard drives are very slow compared to Solid State Drives so upgrading to it will greatly reduce your load time. Use Hard Drive replacement guide and SSD migration guide to speed up your boot time. Since this laptop has room for two drives, your current drive can be used as a storage drive for your multimedia if you choose to add SSD to the second bay, instead of replacing your hard drive entirely.

There are too many programs booting up at the start-up ¶ 

If you have been using your computer for a while, you might have a lot of software installed. Some software runs at the start-up of the computer, which increases the overall loading time. It is not necessary for all of that software to boot up with Windows so turning it off might reduce the loading time. You can disable those programs as well as perform other maintenance by using tune up programs like SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner 4 to decrease your loading time.

These are blink codes that replaced beep (computers used to beep at you) codes in the past few years. These codes indicate what part of the hardware failed at the start-up.

Count the number of blinks and use this chart to identify the faulty part.

RAM failure ¶ 

If your blink code indicates RAM failure first make sure that RAM is inserted correctly, if you have just replaced it.

To figure out whether first, second, or both RAM modules are bad try turning on the laptop with only one modules inserted. RAM can be accessed and replaced using this guide.

Motherboard failure ¶ 

If you get a BIOS, graphics controller or a general failure you might have to replace a motherboard by following this guide.
