My Problem
The "white screen of death"appeared and prevented navigation of the system, but the audio continued to work.
My Fix
The repair went exactly as per the ifixit online instructions.
My Advice
Be careful when reinserting the earphone jack. The ribbon connector must be pushed into the ipod casing with great care. It's easy to disconnect the terminal block from the circuit board when doing this. Before reassembling the device, make sure all controls are functioning properly. Particularly the click wheel and earphone jack.
