My Problem
10 year old iPod classic no longer holding battery charge, shuts off after few minutes when not connected to a charger.
My Fix
I followed the ifixit instructions and was able to open iPod and change the battery in 10 minutes. I used the tools with the kit and 1.5'' putty knife I bought at Home Depot. The IPod works again. Looks like I bend the edges of the metal backplate too much in some areas so there are gaps now in a few spots. However IPod is closed and in 1 piece. Everything works. Also I have rubber sleeve on the iPod so the damage is hidden. I am happy with the result.
My Advice
Plastic tools are only good to hold the gap but not good to pry the edges. I managed to initially pry the edge of IPod with putty knife. It is extreamly hard to bend the edge to unlock the clips without damaging the backplate. I also managed changing the battery without disconnecting the phone jack cable but you have to be careful as dangling cable can be easily damaged.
