My Problem
Dead original battery.
My Fix
Replaced the battery, though it won't hold a charge. Looks like the logic board needs replacing, too. Plugged in, I get full functionality, so probably going to leave as is. This iPod makes an excellent gentle alarm clock!
My Advice
If you're careful, you do not have to remove all the pins to get to the battery. The pins are delicate, easily bent.
