My Problem
I snagged this older Mac Mini Server (two internal 500GB 5400-rpm drives) from a friend's company when they were liquidating some older hardware. It worked fine, but was soooo sllooooowww at everything.
My Fix
I bought a PNY 480GB SSD on Amazon for cheap, and followed the iFixit guide using some tools (two Torx screwdrivers and a Mac Mini Motherboard Tool) I bought from iFixit's store. I was able to do the entire upgrade at my desk during my lunch hour, and the difference now is amazing - this 6-year-old Mac Mini is flying along, and no longer feels horribly painful to use. An astounding improvement given the relatively low expense, and the upgrade process (while not beginner-friendly on this model Mac) was straightforward enough.
My Advice
If you're still limping along with your OS and applications on a mechanical drive, do yourself a favor and jump up to an SSD. The cost is reasonable and the performance improvement is enough to breathe years of additional life into an otherwise-outdated computer.
