rMBP Thermal Paste Replacement & Dust Removal

noaim87 -

My Problem

My machine was running super poorly after two years.

My Fix

The guide from Ifixit made it super easy to change everything. Took about ten minutes to take my machine apart and to get it back together with brand new cooling paste. Used compressed air to clean out all the dust.

My Advice

The screws were screwed too hard by the repair shop which resulted in a broken driver. I learned they need to be opened with a firm pressure down, angled slightly and with a slow and steady twist.

Further, applying the paste properly is essential so you don't conduct electricity from the motherboard to the parts that you apply it, as they conduct power. Just use a small dash in the middle, half the size of a pea, and then screw the heatsinks on. It'll spread it evenly for you.

In the end, my machine was broken from water damage and got sent back to rep. All the parts got changed and it is now functioning perfect.

I fixit sent me a new drive free of charge. Couldn't be more happy with the service from these guys.
