2011 Macbook Pro Repair

bwschieb -

My Problem

My 2011 Macbook has been experiencing some overheating problems, temps at almost 90°C while just web browsing with a few tabs open and the noise was unbearable. Plus it was killing the battery life.

My Fix

The repair went as smoothly as I could have hoped. The screwdriver set was exactly what I needed to get the job done correctly. This was the first time I had taken the whole laptop apart, but there was nothing that made me worried along the way. Works great now. Stays cool and quiet after I got it all apart, cleaned the heatsinks, and replaced the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.

My Advice

The motherboard is tricky to get out. For one thing, there is a plastic sheet between the motherboard and the keyboard that had melted and attached itself to the heatpipes. But don't let that confuse you. Make sure you have all of the screws out and connectors off the motherboard. The motherboard is tricky to pull out because of the tight fit of the I/O, but it'll come out sure enough with the proper leverage.
