My Problem
I own two ipod classics that stopped holding a charge. After the 80gb died I bought a 160gb. After a couple of years it died too. Since classics are discontinued by Apple I figured I'd give the repair a shot.
My Fix
I ordered two batteries + tool kits. Classics are pretty hard to open just as expected. The results are mixed. I got the 160gb working woohoo! The 80gb was a fail :( 1 for 2. Maybe I got a bad battery or did something wrong for the 80gb. btw, I did the 160gb first, that's the one now working.
update: a week later my 160gb that was working isn't holding a charge anymore. It worked perfectly a few times, and then the charge held less and less after each charging.
My Advice
It's possible to replace an ipod classic battery with no experience. It's takes time, patience and research. The blue non marring tools broke. I used a tiny flat head, hobby tweezers and the OTHER tools the kit came with. I didn't use the suggested putty knife but I think it's a good idea.
