iPod Photo 20/30 GB Headphone Jack Bracket

My Problem

A couple of months ago, my four year old iPhone 5S had a severe shutdown. It was all black, and wouldn't start until after a couple of hours connected to the charger. I panicked, thinking the phone was dead.

Luckily it booted up again, but afterwards I have had to charge my phone every night. If not I would risk a shutdown the following day.

My Fix

The repair itself was moderately difficult. Firstly, the plastic bezel wanted to seperate from the glass panel. With a handy plastic opening tool, I got the screen assembly up and supported with a hair tie.

The touch ID cable bracket was easily removed with the spudger. With the battery ready to go, I started to work out the adhesive strips, but disaster! I put too much power and tore them both off. Hair dryer and plastic card to the rescue.

I managed to get the battery out, leaving it with a significant bend. Good thing I let the phone shut down at 1% battery level. Removing old adhesive and applying new strips, while making sure to not touch the new adhesive, very important.

Replacement battery goes in, easy. Reassembling the touch ID bracket was difficult. The adhesive tab was in the way due to poor bending and tucking, but eventually I got the bracket on. Assembling the display back on was a little tricky, making sure to get the top of the display in place.

Success! My phone booted up as normal, following a hard reset.

My Advice

1. Discharge the phone! Even if you are super careful, the battery bends easily.

2. Be patient with the adhesive! Try to be as gentle as possible. Slow and easy does it.

3. Supporting the display 90° will simplify the repair. It also helps preserve the phone.

4. Have a magnetic tray. The screws are tiny! Very handy, if you have a messy desktop.

My Problem

My battery was running out too quickly. Had to charge my phone at least 3 times during the day. The fg_fullcapnom showed the capacity to be 1145, instead of 3000mAh original capacity.

My Fix

YouTube was a big help. I used their complete detailed guide to replace my battery. It went perfectly well.

However, the new battery is equally $@$*. I wiped my cache and discharged and charged the battery several times to ensure correct calibration. After 12 cycles the fg_fullcapnom now shows the capacity to be 1012 (!!??). Since the battery is not OEM, I am now regretting buying from ifixit.

My Advice

The kit did not come with any written guides. The published guide and the youtube video published by ifixit are incomplete. They only show the teardown and say go in reverse for the rest. Nothing about how to use the adhesive or make sure that the phone is water resistant again.

It cost me $43 to buy the kit and the battery including taxes and shipping. Samsung store near me charges $90 to replace my battery with OEM battery without any hassle. I think since it's not that much more to replace it with OEM battery, everyone should skip ifixit and go for the real thing. If not, try ebay, they have OEM batteries (at least advertised).

My Problem

My keyboard was getting worn out and the 'm' key didn't always work which is aggravating.

My Fix

oldturkey03 wrote clear instructions and with good pictures. I found that the screws weren't always where they were shown but that is probably due to HP G72 manufacturing changes. The keyboard is a 'bear' to get loose but it finally came out. First time I finished the whole installation, plugged the computer in and the keyboard did not work! So I took the covers back off (dropped a screw in the process but found it-whew!) and put the ribbon connector in correctly. Before putting the covers back on I checked and all the keys worked (including some I never have used-surprise!). Put the covers back on still works.

My Advice

The U.S. Snail took their own sweet time in getting my piece of plastic (very handy tool to have) and I sent iFixit an email. Kandan sent me a very nice email that soothed my ruffled feathers. Therefore, be patient, unless you live near Magic Mountain and can pick it up yourself, we are still subject to the Snail for delivery.

My next project is to add ram and will definitely use iFixit instructions!

My Problem

The problem is the NOOK HD...what a RIP-OFF! Barely used, yet when not in use, battery dies...after stressing on how to open this item, finally ordered tool....worked great, the tool that is...NOT the Nook...more $$$$ down the drain...#buyingbooksinstead

The replacement of BRAND NEW BATTERY was the hardest and most annoying thing I have experienced in quite awhile. 2000 itty bitty screws AFTER prying the Nook apart, only to have the Nook NOT WORK!!! UGH!!

My Advice

Tell people who want to replace the battery, to just BUY REAL BOOKS!!! That's what I intend to do...very very disgusted w/NOOK HD....

I replace my battery, screen, and lightning connector. I recommend going through the guides while you wait for your parts in the mail. Remember to lay the screws out in a specific order since every group has all different sizes.

Battery was old and phone wasn't holding a charge.

My Fix

Repair was much faster and easier than the guide and online posts. Took me 10 minutes with the standard iFixIt repair kit, which had everything needed and more. Now my iPhone battery and speed is back to normal. Great website, videos and guides!

My Advice

Step 13-16 can be skipped with a well placed prop or another set of helping hands. This limits things that can go wrong. Go super slow and patient on step 8. My screen started separating from plastic bezel. Trick is to use the blue pry tool EVENLY with the suction cup. Read the comments to the repair guide you are using, some where helpful as well.

My Problem

My iPhone 6 Plus display recently started flickering and, at times, became unresponsive unless I literally forcibly twisted the phone in order to get it to respond. This issue was extremely annoying and frustrating, especially when trying to answer a call. So, I had three choices. Buy a new iPhone, take it to an Apple store and have them repair it or "iFixit" myself! I chose the latter.

My Fix

I'm a service technician by trade and I've worked on and repaired many things in my career, but working on something so small and delicate was not something I was looking forward to doing. But, thanks to iFixit's amazing videos and pictorial guides, I felt confident I could handle the repair. In about an hour, I had the phone apart, repaired and reassembled. I bought the iFixit Fix Kit for the task and the tools worked great. Now, my iPhone is as good as new. My only regret was that I didn't order a new battery. Also, I would have posted images, but the phone is my camera, so...

My advice is don't hesitate to give this repair a shot. It is well worth it.

My Problem

The top corner of my screen cracked a whole hour after I took my case off, so I decided to get in touch with my iFixit friends to get it repaired. While I was doing that, I decided to replace the battery as well.

My Fix

It was a piece of cake! The Repair Kit had everything I needed, and was labeled perfectly. It aligned perfectly with the manual, and I knew exactly which tool I needed every step of the way. The high-quality, zoomed in photos of each step helped reassure me when I didn't think I was removing the right part, or something wasn't disconnecting. I never even needed to watch any videos, the manual led me every step of the way! All-in-all, it took me about two hours to remove the screen and battery and to replace it with my new parts.

I have a newfound appreciation for my phone now, and feel like we've been through so much together! It sorta feels like after you get a carwash, when you're extra careful not to drag in any dirt or smudge the windows. I bought a screen protector as well, and honestly I feel like I bought a brand new phone for less than a hundred bucks. Stoked!

My Advice

Following the instructions precisely will probably help avoid having any issues with the reassembly. Any time I felt like something didn't "pop" in correctly or wasn't flush with the rest of the parts, I would refer back to the manual and check the photos.

It also helps to have a piece of paper to label every screw and plate that you remove in order to avoid putting something back in the wrong place.

My Problem

My phone would need to be charged at least 2-3 times a day with moderate normal use. There were times where it would shut off completely with 50-80% battery life showing. Very hard to rely on a phone under the conditions so I purchased the battery fix kit from ifixit and could not be happy with how it turned out. The phone works beautifully again, and now holds a charge for about a day and a half with moderate and normal use. Very satisfied customer here!

My Fix

Went very well. The one difficult part of the install is getting the tiny screws to seat right when installing them back but i believe there were only 5 or 7 total and it was definitely manageable. It seemed overwhelming at first but turned out to be quite simple.

My Advice

Go slow, take your time, and follow the instructions or youtube videos closely and it should go well. Take it one step at a time, do it in an area with good lighting, and also establish a place to put VERY tiny screws so you do not lose them. I dropped one on the floor and thought it was gone but a magnet was able to help me track it down. Go slow and it will be a lot easier to manage.
