Hi! First off before you go work on the sensor, I would check the gas cap

You're going to want to make sure that there is a tight seal on the gas cap, and that when you close the gas cap, it clicks or locks (depends on the car.) Best way to clean the gas cap is to spray some WD40 (NOT INTO THE TANK) around the gas cap on the car. Worst case you do this and the error code doesn't go away, I would buy a new gas cap

Now let's say that the gas cap is all good and it didn't solve the issue. Then you need to replace the Fuel pressure Sensor. This video shows you how to

Now I can say that for your car being a 97-01 Toyota, aftermarkets are about a few hundred dollars compared to paying 300 through Toyota. I would replace the sensor because if you don't, your car will have trouble starting up. Happened to my honda

That sounds like a transmission problem or clutch problem. Have the transmission checked and the clutch.

Inspect your steering U Joint on the steering column down at the steering rack, Mark the alignment prior to disassembly to get it back together as close as possible. Toyota has this problem as it binds up making power steering useless. Also you can disconnect the outer tie rod ends from each of the spindles, this will diagnose the strut bearings and ball joints for binding which are also problematic. If you replace the steering rack as you were not able to find a problem else where, I recommend that you replace the rubber bushings that mount the rack to the car. DO NOT turn the steering wheel too far when things are disconnected as you will break the Clock Spring for the Air Bag. If you tear any grease seals such as the tie rod ends, replace them also. Not sure what you meant when you said “Other than a little bit of oil coming out of the sensor. Maybe transmission oil? Around the sensor was dry”. Did you mean that around the sensor was dry but the sensor itself wasn’t?

Did you replace the o-ring when you replaced the VSS? Was the “oil” covering the connector at all?

Have you scanned the OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics 2)port for any error codes that may give an idea of what is happening?

Oil coming out doesn't sound right and if it is covering the connector (do you mean the electrical connector?) it may be causing electrical problems.

The o-ring should stop any oil coming through where it is bolted on.

Maybe thoroughly clean any oil etc out of the connector and ensure that it is clean and dry.

Then check if the speedo works and if it stops check again for any oil in the connector. If there is any its got to be coming from somewhere.

There are two wires going to the sensor and if there is no more oil and the speedo still fails then with the engine switched off, disconnect the wiring to the sensor and then use an Ohmmeter and connect it across the two wires. There should be a reading back to the ECM. If there is then gently flex the wiring near the connector and see if the reading changes indicating a fractured wire in the connector. Also check the connections of the ECM in case of s loose connection etc.

Well if it's a white smoke on just startup it most likely the valve seats that are leaking a little.as the car sits overnight or for a few hours. A valve job will fix this issue (probably around 600-700 @ shop
