Introduction

This guide shows how to replace the thermal paste on an iBUYPOWER Y40 IBP gaming desktop. Replacing thermal paste helps improve CPU cooling and prevents overheating during use.

Before you begin the repair, ensure the computer is completely powered off, unplugged, and cooled down.

This guide is intended for beginners and requires only basic tools. Following these steps carefully will help ensure proper heat transfer and maintain system performance.

Shut down the computer completely and unplug the power cable before opening the case.
Allow the system to cool for several minutes before you begin the repair.
Never work inside the computer while it is still connected to power.

Carefully remove the tempered glass side panel to access the internal components of the desktop.
Place the panel somewhere safe to avoid scratches or damage.
Handle the glass panel carefully to prevent breakage or scratches.
Identify the CPU cooler mounted on top of the processor. It must be removed to access the processor and replace the thermal paste.
In this system, a liquid CPU cooler is installed with a pump block connected to the radiator.

Step 3

Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver to loosen the CPU cooler screws in a cross pattern, loosening each screw gradually to avoid uneven pressure.

Step 4

Gently lift the CPU cooler straight out from the processor.
If it feels stuck, slightly twist it to break the seal of the old thermal paste before lifting.
Do not touch the surface of the CPU with your fingers, as oils from your skin can affect performance.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber cloth and gently wipe the old thermal paste from both the CPU and the bottom of the cooler.
Continue cleaning until both surfaces are completely clean and dry.
Apply a pea-sized amount of new thermal paste to the center of the CPU.

Place the CPU cooler back over the processor and align it with the mounting holes.
Tighten the screws evenly to secure the CPU cooler in place.
Check that the CPU cooler is properly seated and all screws are tightened securely.
