Introduction
This guide shows how to replace the thermal paste on an iBUYPOWER Y40 IBP gaming desktop. Replacing thermal paste helps improve CPU cooling and prevents overheating during use.
Before you begin the repair, ensure the computer is completely powered off, unplugged, and cooled down.
This guide is intended for beginners and requires only basic tools. Following these steps carefully will help ensure proper heat transfer and maintain system performance.

Shut down the computer completely and unplug the power cable before opening the case.

Carefully remove the tempered glass side panel to access the internal components of the desktop.

Place the panel somewhere safe to avoid scratches or damage.

Identify the CPU cooler mounted on top of the processor. It must be removed to access the processor and replace the thermal paste.

Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver to loosen the CPU cooler screws in a cross pattern, loosening each screw gradually to avoid uneven pressure.

Apply a small amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber cloth and gently wipe the old thermal paste from both the CPU and the bottom of the cooler.

Continue cleaning until both surfaces are completely clean and dry.

Apply a pea-sized amount of new thermal paste to the center of the CPU.

Place the CPU cooler back over the processor and align it with the mounting holes.

Tighten the screws evenly to secure the CPU cooler in place.

Check that the CPU cooler is properly seated and all screws are tightened securely.

To reassemble your device, follow these steps in reverse order. Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.
