Microsoft Surface Pro 5 Motherboard Replacement

What you need

  1.     • Use a spudger to flip up the small locking flaps on the display cable ZIF connectors.

    • Use tweezers to slide the display cables straight out of their sockets on the display board.

    • Slide an opening pick under the display board to separate the adhesive holding it onto the back of the screen.

    • Remove the display board.

    • During reassembly, use a strong double-sided tape or a precut adhesive card to secure the display board. Clean off the old adhesive before applying new adhesive.

    • To ensure correct positioning, plug in both display connectors before adhering the board to the display.

    • Only the screen remains.

    • Insert one point of a pair of pointed tweezers into a gap in the corner of the EMI shield covering the heat sink.

    • Use the tweezers to pry the EMI shield away from the motherboard as much as you can without bending it. Do not remove it yet.

    • Try not to deform the shield too much—you will need to reinstall it during reassembly.

    • Take care not to puncture the battery with the tweezers while working on this shield.

    • Repeat the last step for each corner of the EMI shield covering the heat sink.

    • Remove the heat sink shield.

    • Remove the ten Torx screws securing the heat sink:

    • Five 2.6 mm-long T3 screws

    • Four 3.3 mm-long T5 screws

    • During reassembly, tighten the heat sink screws in the following criss-cross pattern, one turn at a time, until they're tight:

    • Screw 1

    • Screw 2

    • Screw 3

    • Screw 4

    • Pry off the metal cover covering the front and rear camera ribbon cable motherboard connections using a nylon spudger.

    • Lift the front camera ribbon cable off the motherboard using the nylon spudger.

    • Remove the front camera.

    • Remove the two Torx T3 x 2.5mm screws holding down the rear camera.

    • Lift the rear camera ribbon cable off the motherboard using the nylon spudger.

    • Remove the rear camera.

    • Insert one point of a pair of pointed tweezers into a gap in the corner of the EMI shield covering the microSD card reader connector.

    • Use the tweezers to pry the EMI shield away from the motherboard as much as you can without bending it.

    • Repeat this procedure at different points around the shield until it is free. Remove the shield.

    • Try not to deform the shield too much—you will need to reinstall it during reassembly.

    • Use the flat end of a spudger to pry the microSD card reader connector up and out of its socket on the motherboard.

    • Use the flat end of a spudger to lift the flap that sits over the SurfaceConnect port connector.

    • Slide the SurfaceConnect port connector out of its socket on the motherboard.

    • Use a T5 Torx driver to remove the two 3.7 mm screws securing the SurfaceConnect port.

    • Gently pull the SurfaceConnect port out of its recess in the case and remove it.

    • Use the point of a spudger to lift the right speaker connector up and out of its socket on the motherboard.

    • Use a T5 Torx driver to remove the two screws securing the speaker:

    • One 6 mm screw

    • One 3.7 mm screw

    • Use a spudger to lift the left edge of the speaker so that it clears the components around the speaker.

    • With the left edge lifted, slide the speaker to the left, straight out of its recess in the case.

    • Remove the Torx T5 x 6mm screw connecting the black tie bar to the power button/volume control/speaker assembly.

    • Remove the remaining three Torx T5 x 4.5mm screws holding down the camera tie bar.

    • Disconnect the small ribbon cable connecting the camera tie bar to the motherboard by pulling up with tweezers.

    • Lift the camera tie bar off of the device.

    • Disconnect the black and red cable connector and the ribbon from the motherboard that connect the power button assembly.

    • Remove the eight 2.5 mm T3 screws from the motherboard.

    • Use the plastic opening tool to pop up the connector going from the edge of the case to the motherboard.

    • Use a Torx T3 to remove the one 2.5 mm screw on the motherboard.

    • Remove the motherboard by using a hand to lift up and move it to the right.
