What you need

  1. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Wipe away dirt and debris: step 1, image 1 of 2 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Wipe away dirt and debris: step 1, image 2 of 2
    • Look over your jacket and wipe away dirt and debris.

    • For stubborn stains, spot clean using a mild soap or rubbing alcohol. See Spot Cleaning Technical Gear for more details.

  2. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Prepare your jacket: step 2, image 1 of 3 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Prepare your jacket: step 2, image 2 of 3 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Prepare your jacket: step 2, image 3 of 3
    • Zip up the main zipper.

    • Leave pockets unzipped so they can be cleaned inside.

    • Empty all pockets. Check for trash, treasures, or forgotten tissues.

    • Loosen drawstrings and drawcords.

    • Fasten any hook-and-loop closures in their most relaxed position to avoid snagging.

  3. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Load the washing machine: step 3, image 1 of 1
    • Place your jacket in the washing machine.

    • Add 1-3 jackets at a time. Avoid overfilling the drum—technical garments need room to move freely in the wash.

    • Ideally, use a front-loading washer.

    • Top-loaders usually have agitators, a rotating spindle that creates friction to clean your gear. Jackets can get caught in that spindle, leading to tangles, tears, or scratches.

    • If you don’t have a washing machine, hand-washing is a great alternative. You'll still need a dryer or iron to heat-set afterward!

  4. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Add detergent: step 4, image 1 of 1
    • Add technical gear soap or gentle biodegradable laundry detergent to the washing machine.

    • Patagonia recommends Storm Wash, which is specially formulated for technical outerwear and equipment.

    • For standard detergent, choose one that's liquid, biodegradable, and free of dyes. Look for labels like "organic" or "sensitive skin."

    • Avoid detergent containing fabric softeners, stain removers, perfumes, whiteners, or bleach.

  5. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Set the washing machine: step 5, image 1 of 2 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Set the washing machine: step 5, image 2 of 2
    • Set the load size to small or medium, depending on the number of garments you're washing.

    • Set the water temperature to cold or warm.

    • Set the wash cycle to normal or gentle/delicate/permanent press. If possible, add an extra rinse cycle to ensure all residues are removed.

    • Set the spin cycle to low.

    • Start the washing machine.

  6. How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Tumble Dry: step 6, image 1 of 3 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Tumble Dry: step 6, image 2 of 3 How to Wash a Waterproof Jacket, Tumble Dry: step 6, image 3 of 3
    • Hang the jacket up to drip dry first to remove excess water, then tumble dry on low heat for at least 30 minutes or until the jacket is fully dry.

    • Don't skip the dryer! Heat activates the durable water resistant (DWR) coating.

    • If you don’t have a dryer, you can use an iron to reactivate the DWR. Carefully follow the steps in How to Iron a Waterproof Jacket.

    • Your jacket is clean, dry, and ready for whatever the weather throws your way!

    • Get back out there!
