Background and Identification
This headset is an accessory for the PlayStation 3. While there are many PS3 gaming headsets on the market, this one is unique in that it is made by Sony, the maker of the PS3. This makes it more of an ‘official’ headset. The PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset was released fairly late after the release of the PS3, and the market for compatible headsets was already fairly full of third-party models from companies like Turtle Beach, Astro, and MadCatz. To compensate, Sony sold this headset for a reasonably cheap $100. The lower price meant that they had to sacrifice some features, however, and this headset isn’t meant to be top-of-the line.
Engadget.com said in their review that “Sony's $100 WSH won't do amazing virtual 7.1, but should please PS3 owners wanting a basic, hassle-free headset with some bells and whistles.” They praised the design and controls, but had issues with the microphone LED and the average sound quality.
This headset comes with a USB adapter. To use the headset, the adaptor needs to be plugged into the PlayStation 3, and the headset itself must be turned on and in range (within about 10 meters of the console).
