Background and Identification

Nerve stimulators are devices used in Therapeutic Neuromodulation, which is “the alteration of nerve activity through targeted delivery of a stimulus, such as electrical stimulation or chemical agents, to specific neurological sites in the body” according to the International Neuromodulation Society. Essentially, the practice seeks to normalize or modulate nervous tissue function in the patients treated by it. While this can be accomplished chemically with a subdural injection, there are also devices which can produce these stimuli electromagnetically. Nerve stimulators are used to treat medication-resistant epilepsy, chronic migraines, or as functional therapy to treat a range of issues from bodily control to sensory deficits.
