Gritzner 788 Overlock Repair

The Gritzner 788 is an overlock machine rated as "good" by Stiftung Warentest. Until World War II, Gritzner was one of the top sewing machine brands, but it was acquired by Pfaff after the war and production was discontinued.

Today, sewing machines are once again being manufactured under the Gritzner brand name in Taiwan (at least the ones I own). They are imported into Germany by the company Marco Seitz.

Marco Seitz also has a website at www.gritzner-online.de, where B2B spare parts are sold. Most spare parts for private individuals can also be found on the web. This makes the machine easier to repair compared to models sold by discount stores.

However, there are no service or adjustment manuals available for private individuals, not even for a fee. For this reason, I will document my trial-and-error repairs here.

The machine has been around for several years; a few years ago, it received a facelift. Newer machines can be recognized by their LED lighting and by the fact that the respective threads are indicated with pictograms under the color-coded thread tension dials.

There are also a few minor changes to the presser foot and the threading aid for the lower looper.
