Is it the LCD or just the glass that is broken?

I have an iPhone 4 with a broken screen. Is there a way tell what I need to replace? Without pulling the phone apart

Unless the phone has had a screen repair before where the replacement screen and LCD were installed as separate pieces you will have to replace the whole screen assembly. It is not possible to replace only the glass or the lcd on the 4th generation (4 or 4s) models. The LCD display is glued to the back of the glass/digitizer.

You will have to replace the whole glass/digitizer/lcd assembly which does require you to pull the phone apart.
