PRMC2285AF Freezer intermittently Stops

clean up

My fridge has an intermittent high-temperature warning in the freezer. I adopted this fridge from a previous owner about a year ago, so I don't have its full history. The issue is inconsistent — it comes and goes, sometimes correcting itself without any intervention. The onboard diagnostic UI isn't the most intuitive, but here's what I've tested so far:

  • FZR Defrost Heater (diagnostic test 2) — Passed. Sensor temperature rose as expected when commanded on.
  • FRZ Evaporator Fan Motor (diagnostic test 15) — Passed. Fan spins normally when commanded.
  • Compressor — Turns on correctly via Freezer Boost (on prior attempts).
  • Manual defrost cycle — Performed once; effect on the coil wasn't confirmed either way.
  • Evaporator coil physical inspection — Attempted twice; couldn't get the back panel off to visually check for frost/ice buildup.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Hi @ivansanche81883

What is the full model number of the refrigerator? Asking because there are 9 model variants and upon checking they're not all exactly the same, i.e. different service data sheets.

Intermittent makes it difficult but perhaps check if the freezer evaporator sensor tests OK. See test #39 in this service data sheet Hopefully it is applicable to your model.

Reason for this is that the refrigerator has an adaptive defrost system which means that the auto defrost cycle can occur irregularly and is not on a fixed time cycle.

The evaporator temp sensor is used to protect the evaporator during the defrost cycle from becoming too warm by disconnecting the power to the defrost heater if it does. If it fails to do this then perhaps that's why the freezer high temp warning occurs as the freezer compartment may be also getting too warm.

Worth checking anyway.
