Why is the top half of my display dark?

I have an iMac 24" desktop, Model #A1225. Manufactured 2007-2008. Last three of Serial # is X89.

When we got up this morning, the top half of the display has dimmed considerably. You can still see the desktop, but it is really dark. The lower half of the display still looks normal.

In searching on the problem, it looks like it may be the inverter. Is this something that someone with reasonable mechanical skills can fix, or would it be better to take it to the iHospital? Any idea on approximate cost to have it fixed by one of their technicians?

The top set of the CFL's has gone.

You'll need to either exchange out the display unit or if your skilled isolate out why the top has gone dark could be the CFL's or the inverter power lines has come loose (or cold solder joint) powering the top lamps.

Be careful here as the voltages are quite high and the CFL's are very fragile if you try replacing them (and have mercury vapor in them).
