Replacing engines requires a lot of tools and test equipment. Best to find a local mechanic do the job. Your choice of engine is mostly limited to what the vehicle came with.

Are you sure the engine is shot? Rebuilding is often done not replacing.

@inbankuppan not as easy as the pages for the Porsche 996 Engine Removalfrom the FSM make it sound like but definitely doable. Working on a Porsche is not quite rocket science but it does have some tight fits and requires special tools. Besides that, it's just as straightforward as any other performance vehicle.

Just in case yours is a GT3 use the Porsche 996 GT3 Engine Removal since it is a bit different.

Here is the List for the Porsche 996 Engine Part Numbers of replacement engines, you will need to match your model on this page for a replacement. BTW, as you probably already know, those are not inexpensive ;-)
