How can I recovery HDD information from a dead compaq presario V6000?

How can I recovery, "mainly" my outlook old emails and files in a HDD from this dead computer?

Computer was running a Windows XP and Office 2003, it doesn't start up any more, I get a message saying that Windows is corrupted and need the CD installation which I don't have any more.

If I remove the HDD can I read it and recovery with my MAC just connecting with and adapter to USB 2.0? I have a VMWare fusion running in my machine with windows 7 and Office 2011. If so, how is the procedure for that!

Somebody knows if is there any silicon enclosure that I can get and connect it?

The HDD model is: Momentus 5400-3, HP 418267-002

Thanks everybody!

It does not sound like your HDD is giving you errors, just your OS. I would the drive connected, boot from the optical drive with a Live Linux CD and copy the files needed. Just remember, since you are still without an OS, I would also consider to get a proper version of the OS of your choice, otherwise the computer will remain non-functional.

He could actually fix it easily.

This is a well-known problem, you can fix it by following this guide (not on ifixit this time ;) )

@The tinker, that is correct. There are a few other ways of getting it done, most of them require access to the OS to incorporate those. However, I still advocate top get a backup of ones OS, and even if it is just for cases like this. Even the link that you provided requires the CD.....

hi there,

didn't work!

I'm still getting the following message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file."

by

It still is trying to boot from your HDD, you must set the boot order in your BIOS to CD first. Then you can boot from either your Windows CD or a Live Linux CD.

We can easily find it on internet: just type something like "download windows xp iso" and you'll get what you need.
