does tesa tape 66822 really required on LCD only replacement?

dear all,

macbook pro 14 inch 2021 a2442, i already bought the LCD only panel, but no steel bracket

i find guides on youtube guys telling to stick the old bracket to new LCD with tesa tape model 66822, but i can't buy it in my country, can i just use 3M tissue tape?

or it will risk cracking the LCD glass on assembly process cause by pressure or movement while fitting it into bezel?

any tape suggested to use around the bezel surrounding LCD also? i see it was so thin

Helps if we knew your location...... iFixit should give an option to add a flag or something to users profiles, this would help loads. BTW your brave to attempt this, it is much easier just to replace the whole top assembly.

actually the customer just sent me lcd panel and the macbook pro, so my job is just to install it

i ask him and he said choose panel only because it was cheaper 🤣

i'm in jakarta, indonesia, search on the marketplace no one sold tesa tape of that model bro

@aaron75 They maybe able to help you in finding parts or they may even have 'spares' laying around, who knows. https://www.thebookyard.com/ is a good source as a backup.

If you bought the raw LCD panel you are a brave person! From 2016 onward Apple’s addiction to thin makes repairing MacBook displays an assembly only direction for most people.

If you can, I strongly recommend returning the raw panel getting instead the assembly. Trust me you don’t want to tackle this job, even I don’t and I only fix Mac’s as it’s a very delicate job and you really need to have your skills honed doing this everyday.

Most break the fragile panel or damage/dirty up the diffuser sheets.

In the end you’ll have a happy customer and still have some coin for the job. Otherwise you run the risk of having to buy the assembly to cover the repair costing a fair bit of coin, time and an unhappy customer given the delays getting the computer fixed.

I wouldn’t do the job as your success is so low.

@danj actually bro i don't dare to try but this was already sent to me, and i just found out it was without bottom bracket

i have replace many lcd panels only on macbook pro 2016 2017 2018 2019 and 2020 M1 and usually when i bought it all comes with bracket so its easy i never had problems except if i got dust inside i use a vacuum cleaner and clean it..

on my trial and error if to much heat applied and to much alcohol applied when opening, backlight paper broke, luckily i have reseller here selling it so i can replace it from donor or just buy new paper backlight

but luckily never crack any of the lcd on install process

@aaron75 - If you go down this path you’ll need to recover the metal frame from the current panel. Soaking it in a strong solvent to remove the glue without bending it.

Tesa or 3M tape should work. The Tesa tape has a stronger adhesion once it’s set. You have no second chances once the surfaces touch.

does it need to be the foam type? cause i only has the 3M tissue type and no shock absorbent

@aaron75 - Only the iMac screens use foam tape so it can be cut with the pizza cutter. The MacBook Pro’s use the standard Tesa 61395 Tape

Don’t use this tape on iMac’s as it makes it extremely hard to open the system later. Only use the custom die cut tapes.

Don’t use generic 3M tissue tape—it’s usually too thick and compressible, which can stress the glass and cause cracks during assembly. You need thin, high-bond, low-compress tape. Use 3M 9448A, 300LSE (9495LE), or Tesa 61395/61365. Keep bezel tape very thin to avoid pressure points.
