The best way to find out what's wrong is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned using an appropriate scantool to find out what DTC codes(s) are being stored. The code will tell you what the problem is.
In the USA larger retail auto parts stores e.g. AutoZone etc will do this for free apparently.
