The Game Boy released on April 21, 1989 in Japan, followed by North America on July 31, 1989, and lastly in Europe on September 28, 1990. It is characterized by a large grey casing and model number DMG-01.

Screen not displaying correctly

When I turn my gameboy on the screen has a big black box on it. If I put a game in it makes the Nintendo ding but nothing happens. I’ve attached pictures of the screen. I’m assuming it’s a gameboy issue and not a game issue or is it a both issue? Is it fixable !?

@claired63511 your attached pictures do not show. Use this guide to add pictures. Adding images to an existing question.

"big black box on it" is usually a screen issue

@claired63511 that indeed looks like a bad screen; those vertical lines are a petty good indicator that your screen has failed. The repair is not terribly complicated and there is a great guide for it Game Boy Screen Replacement

Check online for replacement displays

Hi!

To add: under the screen you have a black piece of tape, remove this completely and then you can use the soldering iron with some solder on it on that spot. Just move your soldering iron from left to right and backwards, now you shall see that the lines are coming back again! Don’t hold your soldering iron too long on a spot, otherwise it will get burned. Do this many times, till you have all the lines back :)!

Sometimes, this method won’t work anymore or the lines are dissapearing again, if this is the case, you need to replace the screen..

Good luck with the repair!
