hard drive partition question.

i want to partition my drive and i have attempted this once but when i did this it erased my drive. how do i do this is it supposed to do that if so do i just reinstall lion again into my main partition then install the next?

Options

Partitioning the hard drive will erase it. Do the partition right after formatting the drive, then do your system installation.
