My car is not recognizing the key. Is my only key

The chip on my key is not working. Can I reprogram the key myself. It rotates but it doesn't turn on. Thanks.

Hi @alex99751

No it won't start as the control module needs information from the key to know that it is the correct one and not just another key that fits the ignition.

You could try reprogramming the key to see if that works.

If not, it may be problem with the key sensor module in the car.

Search online for "Mercury Grand Marquis (insert year model) how to program fob key".

@alex99751 It's hard to say; some cars you can and others require specialized equipment. Without knowing the year of yours, we can't look it up for you.

I believe the key is passive as opposed to a FOB that has a battery. Therefore if it is not working, the problem is likely the sensor in the car. It is possible, but unlikely, that the programming got corrupted. If it did, u might have a bigger problem. I found the dealer had better prices than a locksmith YMMV.
