testing the iPhone 4 earpiece speaker

Is there anyway to test the earpiece speaker (upper speaker) on an off contract AT&T iPhone 4? Is it used for anything other than calls?

Record a voice memo in the Voice Memos app that came with your phone and when you go to play it back you can choose the speaker you would wish to play it out of.
