i tried flashmodding my ipod and it shows a file icon. when i put in its hd, it also shows a file icon. it doesn't show up in disk utility or itunes. would be awesome if someone can help me out

The "file icon" in question indicates that your flashmod doesn't have the iPod's required filesystem. iTunes is supposed to detect your iPod when it's connected. If you are using a flashmod with SanDisk cards they won't work. Use Samsung or some other brand.
